Originally built in 1917 as the Schoellkopf Powerhouse, this historic structure was once part of a larger industrial complex that manufactured dyes and colorants for the textile industry. Operations ceased in the early 2000s, but the building has since been reborn as a celebrated architectural gem in Western New York.
Today, it serves as a vibrant event space, hosting weddings, showers, exhibitions, and—most notably for me—the Step Out Buffalo Makers & Shakers Market. I've had the pleasure of participating in both the Spring and Winter shows at least six times, and each experience has been meaningful. It’s a space where I connect with new faces, discover incredible products from local and national vendors, and feel a deep appreciation for Buffalo’s creative small business community.
This painting was created as a tribute—a way to honor the building’s stunning exterior, which is just as remarkable as the energy within its walls. I included a small buffalo couple in the scene, symbolizing newlyweds, friends, or families who have shared special moments inside the Powerhouse.
The original piece measures 11"x14", painted on Arches 300lb cold pressed paper. It's matted in a soft blue-grey and framed in a rich cherry wood tone, bringing the total size to 16"x20".
